Kelloggs issued a statement saying that a petrochemical was the cause of sickening smell that caused some to become ill and led to the massive cereal recall. Kellogg’s was recently procactive in issuing a voluntary recall for several of it’s cereals. The recall was for
Apple Jacks, Honey Smacks, Corn Pops, and Fruit Loops. Kellogg’s, the worlds largest cereal maker, pulled millions of packages of the above listed cereals from store shelve. Kellogg’s says that a paper backed foil liner is to blame for an off flavor and smell on effected boxes. The company says the chance of illness was low but decided to be proactive and recall the items. The Environmental Working group reviewed the chemical and stated that the history of the chemical is checkered at best and that millions of pounds are produced every year and the chemical is turning up in packaging for popular cereals marketed toward children. Kelloggs said in a statement that the presence of the chemical did not pose a serious health risk. They state that the specific wax is commonly used in protective coating for foods that include cheese, raw fruits, and vegetables. They also stated that they have verified that the elevated levels of hydrocarbons are not present at harmful levels. Kelloggs is working with the supplier to ensure that this situation does not happen again.
