Hair loss is a major concern for many in America and researchers are currently analyzing research results to help those with varying types of hair loss conditions. Researchers have recently identified a gene that could positively impact treatments for male patterned baldness and other forms of hair loss in males and females. The find was made by a team of researchers from Columbia, Rockefeller, and Stanford Universities. The results were reported in detail in the Journal Nature. The gene is identified as gene APCDD1 which can causes hair loss.

“The Identification of this gene underlying hereditary hypotrichosis simplex has afforded us an opportunity to gain insight into the process of hair follicle miniaturization, which is most commonly observed in male pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia,” according to Dr. Christiano, professor of dermatology and genetics and development at Columbia University Medical Center. The findings suggest that by manipulating a specific development of the hair follicle, the researchers may be able to control or manipulate hair follicle growth which could promote hair growth for people suffering from hair loss. This research is still being analyzed and new research continues to develope and progress so that the doctors can better understand the genetic causes of other forms of hair loss as well.
